Among the Danube there was a special reinforced military line, called the limes, which secured the borders of the empire. This military line reinforced by military bases, ran along the east border of Tolna County, most of the significant townships was next to the limes. An important example of limes is a military base from the age of the Roman Empire, called Lussonium, which was discovered in Paks-Dunakömlőd.

The main stress of defense was reorganized to the fortresses among the Danube bank, instead of wooden watchtowers of the limes next to the floodplain of the Danube.
